PROSECUTORS in Almeria have requested that a former Mayor of Albox be sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison if found guilty on charges connected to contracts.

Provincial prosecutors claimed in their initial submissions to the Huercal-Overa court that Jose Garcia Navarro falsified public documents to give the appearance of at least three irregular contracts being legal.

The contracts relate to the reinforcing of walls next to Albox’s ravine, the building of a wasterwater treatment plant and laying water pipes. They were worth a total of €1,123,740.

Garcia Navarro has been charged with abusing his position as mayor to sign off the contracts illegally, falsifying public documents and official wrongdoing.

Prosecutors claimed the former mayor signed off the projects without prior approval from the rest of the town’s council. He then forged documents to make them appear legal.

Garcia Navarro is due to stand trial alongside two other defendants at the Court of Instruction Number Three in Huercal-Overa.

Jorge PM, the town’s former municipal secretary, is a co-defendant to the same charges as the former mayor. Prosecutors have requested 10 years in prison and a 14 year disqualification from public office for the ex-official.

Francisco SG is charged as being a necessary collaborator in the offences. He faces six years in jail and a 15 year disqualification from serving in public office if found guilty.
