ALMERIA finished 2017 with 4,000 more unemployed people than the previous year, according to data released by the Survey of Active Population (EPA).

The province finished the year with a total of 90,500 unemployed at the end of the year, compared to 86,500 registered the same period of 2016.

However, the EPA did record a decrease of 5,900 unemployed in the final three months of the year after the figure stood at 96,400 at the end of the third quarter.

Despite ending the year with 2.6 more job creation than the previous year, the General Union of Workers (UGT) Almeria admits there is a long way to go after the alarming end of year figures.

General Secretary of the General Union of Workers (UGT) Almeria, Carmen Vidal, told Spanish media: “We still have a lot to do until we reach the recovery of employment before the crisis in our province, especially with regard to improvements wages, collective bargaining, as well as in employment, since labor reforms have served only for young people to emigrate abroad in search of opportunities, increase the scourge of temporary employment, increase unemployment in people over 45 years of age and increase long-term unemployed.”
