SPAIN’S Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, has taken part in a formal sitting of the Lower House of Parliament to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first elections to be held in the country on June 15 1977.
Also in attendance were Their Majesties King Felipe and Queen Letizia.
The event began with the award of commemorative badges to some MPs who formed part of the Constituent Assembly.
Once all the invited guests and members had taken their seats, the Speaker of the Lower House, Ana Pastor, opened the session and gave a speech.
Subsequently, King Felipe VI took the floor to address the members of the Upper and Lower Houses who had gathered to hear the gracious speech.
After the session was adjourned, the King and Queen, together with the presidents of the highest State institutions and other national VIPs, opened the exhibition entitled “40 years since first democratic elections” being displayed in the Ampliación III Chamber found in the Lower House.
